The problem
Ball screw and guide rails sticking together on a 2 screw lathe
The facts
An automobile manufacturer has 5 lathes in operation, with the workpiece machining being cooled with a commercially available cooling lubricant. During the turning process the ball screws and guide rails are exposed to the cooling lubricant.
The consequence
During machine downtimes at the weekend, oily incrustations/dirt formed on the running surfaces of the ball screws and the guide rails due to the drying of the cooling lubricant (cooling lubricant = water/oil mixture). When the
machine was put into operation once more, these deposits penetrated the nuts of the ball screws and the roller carriages
of the guide rails, causing the screw nuts and
carriages to seize up.
